What do you think? The study of philosophy is the consideration of the fundamental problems of life. But more practically, a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy will prepare you to be able to think critically on just about every topic, which can be applied to a variety of careers, ranging from law and business to the arts. Whether you’re interested in rigorous yet flexible career preparation, or thoughtful analysis about reality, truth, meaning and justice, a BA in philosophy degree is for you. And BSU’s Department of Philosophy offers many concentrations to customize your philosophy education.

Study with honors

BSU’s chapter of Phi Sigma Tau, the international honors society for philosophy, is open to sophomores and higher — you don’t have to be a bachelor’s degree in philosophy student — with a 3.0 average in two or more philosophy classes and a 3.2 cumulative GPA.

Get together with other BA in philosophy students in the BSU Philosophy Club. Along with publishing the annual BSU Philosophy Journal, members meet weekly to talk about philosophy and other topics.

BSU’s philosophy faculty represent many perspectives on a variety of areas. They include several nationally and internationally recognized scholars, a senior fellow of a leading Canadian think tank, and an ethics consultant at Harvard Medical School.

Choose from five concentrations

Besides the general major in philosophy, our bachelor’s degree in philosophy program offers areas of specialization that allow you to focus on your goals and interests, from exploring analytic philosophies to the history of philosophy.

Pathway to grad school

As a BA in philosophy student, you’ll gain valuable skills and experience that will prepare you to join the workforce right after graduation or further your education in a graduate program.

Earn your law degree

BSU now has a 3+3 program in partnership with UMass Law. Through this accelerated program, you may complete your bachelor's degree in philosophy at Bridgewater and your JD law degree at UMass Law in a total of six years, instead of the usual seven.
