Beyond the Classroom

Internships

Internships enable students to get hands-on experience as they translate classroom learning into actual projects for real-world organizations and academic laboratories. Chemistry students have worked in the laboratories of diverse companies involved in chemical research and development both in the United States and abroad. This incredible experience prepares students for the rigors and rewards of full-time jobs in a range of fields.

Undergraduate Research

Undergraduate research is an integral part of our program. Faculty work in direct collaboration with our students on a wide variety projects ranging from developing environmentally benign processes to examining DNA repair mechanisms. This direct collaboration provides our students with a learning environment unique among public institutions. Research is generously supported through the Office of Undergraduate Research in the form of summer research and travel grants. Each year, students involved in research have the opportunity to present their work at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society.

Student Academic Clubs

The Chemistry Club undertakes community outreach, promotes research and provides networking opportunities for students interested in chemistry. In addition, the Inclusive Advancement of Multicultural Students in STEM (IAMSSTEM) supports the individual needs of students from multicultural backgrounds, so they are better prepared to succeed academically and professionally in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.
