Beyond the Classroom

Internships

Whether as mathematicians, statisticians, teachers or workers in any career that requires strong analytical skills, BSU students seeking hands-on preparation for employment upon graduation find internships to be invaluable. Recent internships have included work with local engineering firms, banks and insurance agencies and with local public schools. Math majors also have the opportunity to work as tutors serving their fellow Bridgewater classmates.

Undergraduate Research

Mathematics majors may choose to engage in undergraduate research projects or study tours abroad. Our lab in the Dana Mohler-Faria Science and Mathematics Center offers research computers, an extensive library of books and educational games and puzzles with both mathematical and pedagogical purposes. Students can connect with faculty’s own areas of research, or design their own projects. Many of our math students have received research grants, had their research published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at regional and national conferences, including the competitive Posters on the Hill event in Washington, D.C.

Math Club

The Math Club’s mission is to enhance the appreciation for mathematics among both students and faculty, to encourage students to explore new developments and careers in mathematics and related fields and to provide opportunities for students and faculty to socialize. The Club meets biweekly and hosts several events throughout the year, including SET contests and board game nights, Family Feud-style game shows and the infamous Pie Your Professor contest on Pi Day, as well as career panels in the fall and spring semesters.
